Northern plains of India lies to the south of Himalayas and to the north of Indian peninsula. It is a plain formed by the depositional work of three major river systems viz., the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra that’s why Northern plain is also known as Indo-Gangetic-Brahmaputra plain.

The significance of Northern Plains:

It is the largest alluvial tract of the world extending for a length of 3200 km from the mouth of Indus to the mouth of Ganga.
It has fertile alluvial soil, flat surface, slow moving perennial rivers.
With less than 1/4th of the total area of the country, It is home of about half of the Indian Population.
Highest population densities depending purely upon agro-based economy and this agro based industry is developed because of extensive use of irrigation.
Northern plain has a big network of roads and railways which has developed large scale industrialisation and urbanization and this led to the development of trade and commerce in northern plains.
In northern plain there are many religious places along the banks of sacred rivers.Here flourished the religions of Budha and Mahavira and the movements of Bhakti and Sufism

3. flats lands are good for roads nad railways
4. irrigation facilities.
5. for construction of H. E.P plants.
