1. Flood, drought, electricity and famine were the crises faced by our country. We managed it in structured fashion with the help of multipurpose river valley projects.

2. It helps in controlling flood, providing water for irrigation e.g. Tungbhadra dam has prospects of irrigating 4.97 lakh hectare of farming land and electricity eg. Damodar valley project provides electricity of Industrial areas of Chotanagpur Plateau.

3. The man made lakes accommodate large volume of water, control flood and provide water for irrigation.Eg. Govind Sagar man made lake in Himachal Pradesh.

4. Catchment areas of these dams are forested thus help in the conserving the flora and faunna.

5. Water channels and canals help in irrigation in the water deficient areas.Eg Indira Gandhi Canal is a source of irrigation in a drier part of Rajasthan.

6. It generates pollution free electricity

from renewable source of energy.Areas

where coal reserves and other source of

energy is not present, river valley

projects play a major role. Eg Bhakra
