Rivers carry water and nutrients to areas all around the earth. They play a very important part in the water cycle, acting as drainage channels for surface water. Rivers drain nearly 75% of the earth's land surface. Rivers provide excellent habitat and food for many of the earth's organisms.

All civilizations depend on available water, and, of course, rivers are a fine source. Rivers also provided ancient societies with access to trade -- not only of products, but ideas, including language, writing, and technology.

Early Indian culture originated near river regions. Early civilisation in India were concentrated near rivers like narmada, ganga, indus. The name of our country is derived from the name of river Indus.

Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Narmada, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. These seven rivers are considered important on historical and cultural basis. The Ganga, Yamuna, and Godavari are considered to represent trinity gods Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Bhrama respectively. Prayang the meeting point of these rivers has much importance in the Hindu religion.

Ganga is most important river of all the rivers. Many of the sacred places are built on its bank. And around 20 million people bath in the these holy waters at haridwar during kumbh mela.

Yamuna has the birthplace of lord krishna and most of his childhood was described near Yamuna. Taj mahal is built on the bank of yamuna.

Early civilisation like mahenjo daro and lothal flourished on the bank of river sarswati and has significant part in their development.

In south godavari, krishna and kaveri has equal significance. Godavari is even known as “Dakshin Ganga” southern ganga.

Indian cultures flourished near rivers and developed in thier nourishment.
