Explain the importance of the following a) salivary amylase
b) villi
c) pepsin
Answers
Answer:
a)Salivary amylase provide a liquid medium to the food to pass through oesophagus, it also absorbs few amount of nutrients. The human saliva contains an enzyme called salivary amylase which digests the starch present in food into sugar.
b)They increase the surface area of the intestines, increasing diffusion/absorption of the digested matter into the bloodstream to be used around the body.
c)The enzyme pepsin is a protease only active at low pH. It releases polypeptides and amino acids from digested proteins. Pepsin does also cleave nucleic acids into smaller fragments. Pepsin is effective and essential for digestion as well as for protection.
Answer:
Explanation:(i) (a) Salivary amylase: It’s an enzyme present in
the saliva, secreted by salivary glands. It
digests starch into maltose there by starting
the digestion of carbohydrate in the buccal
cavity.
(b) Villi: They increase the surface area for
absorption of digested food into the blood.
(c) Pepsin: It is a digestive enzyme secreted
by gastric glands. It is responsible for the
digestion of proteins in stomach.
