Before 1828 it was thought that organic compounds cannot be prepared in laboratory because it needs a supernatural force called vital force which is present only in the body of living organism. This was called vital force theory.
This theory was rejected by friedrick wohler in 1828, when he prepared Urea (NH2)2CO an organic compound from inorganic ammonium cyanate (NH4CNO) in laboratory. This was the first organic compound synthesized outside the body of living organism
NH4CNO → (NH2)2CO
This encourages other scientists and a large number of organic compounds were synthesized in laboratory and in industries. Therefore wohler is the pioneer of modrn organic chemistry.
