An oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction is a type of chemical reaction that involves a transfer of electrons between two species. The formation of hydrogen fluoride is an example of a redox reaction.

Explanation:

oxidation:Oxidation is the loss of electrons during a reaction by a molecule, atom or ion. Oxidation occurs when the oxidation state of a molecule, atom or ion is increased.Examples:The iron metal is oxidized to form the iron oxide known as rust. Electrochemical reactions are great examples of oxidation reactions. When a copper wire is placed into a solution that contains silver ions, electrons are transferred from the copper metal to the silver ions. The copper metal is oxidized.

Reduction: Reduction involves a half-reaction in which a chemical species decreases its oxidation number, usually by gaining electrons. The other half of the reaction involves oxidation, in which electrons are lost. Together, reduction and oxidation form redox reactions (reduction-oxidation = redox).

An example of a reduction is when iron reacts with oxygen, forming iron oxides commonly known as rust. In that example, the iron is oxidized and the oxygen is reduced. This is called redox. A blast furnace reverses that reaction, using carbon monoxide as a reducing agent to reduce the iron.
