Our government has taken various steps to ensure higher literacy rate. Firstly Right to Education act declares that all the children upto the age of 14 are entitled to free compulsory education. Children are provided free education in the government school. Moreover, the expenses of books and uniform are also borne by the school for poor children. Mid-day meal is also provided to the children.
Besides, there are many programs like ladli are introduced to raise the enrollment and education of girl child.
Adult education is also taken up in many villages by the schools to spread awareness and literacy among illiterate adults.

just after the independence india had literacy rate of around 12% which was worst than most of other countries.india was far behind in every sector either it is economy or industrialisation or health care facilities or any other human developement index.the only way to get rid of all the issue was education.so government started launching various education programme to enhance litracy rate."Mid day meal" and "sarva siksha abhiyan" was the key programmes which helped to improve in education.
at first right to education was considered as one of the Directive principle of state policy then after 86th amendment act 2002 it was included in article 21A by making it a fundamenta right.so this is a fundamemtal right to have education among children of age range 6-14 years and alongwith this under article 45 state should promote and provide education based on their economic capacity.
recently government combines three of the programmes name "sarva siksha abhiyan" , "rashtriya madhyamik siksha abhiyan" and "teacher education" to "samagra siksha".
after implementing all the initiative literacy rate touched a mark 74(approx) qccording to 2011 census, now it would be around 80% just below the world average of 84%.the main hole in this data is 'gender disparity'.as man literacy rate is around 80% while woman's is 64%.for this government initiated 'beti bachao beti pdhao' scheme.
despite all the schemes and huge allocation of funda india is still far behind in education aspect and even more legging in higher education.
