In common law legal systems original jurisdiction of a court is the power to hear a case for the first time, as opposed to appellate jurisdiction, when a higher court has the power to review a lower court's decision. Original jurisdiction refers to the right of the Supreme court to hear a case for the first time.

Original Jurisdiction :-

The High Court performs the original Jurisdiction in the following matters :-

● The original jurisdiction is limited but cases related to fundamental rights, divorce, wills and law related to marriage can be brought directly to High Court.

● The High Court has the power to issues writs (orders) for the improvement of fundamental rights .

● Powers to interpret the constitution. This power is also known as the power of Judicial review.

Appellate Jurisdiction :-

The High Court hears appeals against all types of decision made by the subordinate courts . The appeal can be of civil as well as criminal cases. It also hear appeals in matters concerning land revenue and its collection.
