According to Mendel's law of segregation, for any trait, each pair of alleles of a gene split and one of those genes passes from the parents to the offsprings (or from one generation to another).

Here, we have two types of plant: Tall and dwarf. A crossing between them is done. As you can see (1), only one gene passes to the next generation. Again by selfing, the genes are segregated in (2). They fused to form different types of plants (phenotypically and genotypically).
