THE FIVE LAWS OF FRICTION. When an object is moving, the friction is proportional and perpendicular to the normal force (N) Friction is independent of the area of contact so long as there is an area of contact. The coefficient of staticfriction is slightly greater than the coefficient of kineticfriction.
Advantages. The force of friction acts in the opposite direction that the object is moving, so friction slows down the motion of moving objects. Friction also produces unnecessary heat. For example, car engines become hotter because of friction.
