Explain the layers of ATMOSPHERE
Answers
Layers in the atmosphere :-
The atmosphere is divided into the following five layers :
Troposphere
Troposphere is the layer closest to the Earth's surface. We live in this layer along with other animals and plants. Cloud formation and weather changes take place in the troposphere. It contains nearly 80% mass of the atmosphere. It extends 10-15 km above the surface of the Earth.
Stratosphere
The stratosphere is nearly a 35-km thick layer above the troposphere. It contains a gas called ozone. Ozone acts like a shield and protects us from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the Sun. Ozone absorbs the UV radiation and prevents it from reaching the Earth. UV radiation can cause sunburns, irritation of eyes and skin cancer.
Mesosphere
The layer above the stratosphere is the mesosphere. It extends to nearly 35 km above the stratosphere. It is the coldest layer of the atmosphere. It contains very little quantities of oxygen, ozone and water vapour. It burns and destroys the meteors that enter the atmosphere from space before they can strike the Earth's surface.
Thermosphere
The thermosphere lies directly above the mesosphere. It is about 450-900 km in thickness. Space shuttles orbit in this layer.
Exosphere
The exosphere merges with the outer space. Most of the satellites orbiting the Earth are located in this layer.
