Matchstick is a really old device but for our amazement safety matches were made after the invention of a lighter. So basically the surface we strike contains red phosphorus and powdered glass for friction. And the head contains antimony trisulphide and pottasium chlorate. When we strike the match over the surface the red phosphorus gets converted into white phosphorus which then reacts with potassium chlorate in the head which produces enough heat to ignite the antimony trisulphide and light the match.
Obviously it's not that simple as it looks like.
