explain the line from AN OLD MAN AT THE BRIDGE by ERNEST HEMINGWAY :
I was watching the bridge and African looking country of the Ebro Delta and wondering how long now it would be before we would see the enemy and listening all the while for the first noises that would signal that ever mysterious event called contact.

plz answer this clearly ASAP​

The author had one job (mentioned in the book u should be knowing this) . he was a soldier of  an african country near the ebro delta. The fascists were advancing towards the ebro delta (the african country and fascists were at armed conflict at that time ) and therefore the author was anxious to when he would hear the first noises that the fascists had reached the ebro delta and started firing . (artillery was being used ).

Here these lines mean that the narrator was observing the bridge and the Village he was standing looked like an African country. He was thinking that now for how much more time would the environment will remain silent as if the fascists will advance then artillery will make surrounding noisy and dull. He was waiting for the noises that will give the signal of advancing fascists which was till then mysterious. But the old man sat there even on knowing that fascists were advancing.
