It donates protons in the form of a hydrogen ion (H+). This is reinforced by the definition of an acid, which is a solution that has an excess of hydrogen ions (H+). The Bronsted-Lowry base, on the other hand, is a solution that accepts protons, and is known as a proton

The protonic definition can not be used to explain the reactions occuring in non-protonic solvents such as COCl₂,SO₂,N₂O₄ etc.
It fails to explain the reactions between acidic oxides like CO₂,SO₂,SO₃ etc. and the basic oxides like CaO,BaO,MgO etc. which take place even in the absence of the solvent. For example,CaO+SO₃->CaSO₄ ,there is no proton transfer in this reaction.
Substances like BF₃,AlCl₃ etc. do not have any hydrogen and hence can not give proton but are acidic.
