When a a compass is placed in proximity to a current carrying wire then there is a deflection seen in the the compass needle.
Explanation:
- Due to the flow of electric current there is the presence of of electric and magnetic field line. This results in changes in the direction of the compass needle because of the magnetic field.
- This can be demonstrated by an experiment where a compass needle is placed at various points and the direction of the magnetic field is found out.
The magnetic field lines represent the fingers which are curled when the thumb points at the direction of the flow of the current.
