Answer: Chemical effect of electric current is commonly explained by electrolysis. In electrolysis, chemical dissociation of the ionic compounds can be achieved by the passage of direct electric current through them.

For example, in the electrolysis of acidified water, the electrolyte remains a simple chemical compound in the voltmeter until an electric field is created by the passage of a DC through the dissimilar rods. The charged rods now polarise the electrolyte and ions are created and drift towards a rod of opposite charge. This directional mobility of ions is what constitutes current conduction through liquids.

Now, electrolysis can lead to the separation of a chemical substance into other stable components, such as in the electrolysis of acidified water where 2vol of hydrogen gas is produced per vol of oxygen gas, which is a completely chemical process. We can therefore say that current due have chemical effects and electrolysis is a simple way of describing it.

Electric current does have other effects such as magnetic effect and heating effect.
