Many of us tend to think of democracy as the best form of government, irrespective of location or the people involved. It might stem from the ingrained belief that people are equal, confirmation bias, or the human tendency that other people ought to look at the world the way we do.

As evinced from the name, democracy is supposed to be “Rule of the people”, ensuring that power isn’t necessarily concentrated in the hands of a few (an aristocracy- the forms of governance can vary from feudalism to absolute monarchies to one-party rules). It’s not the best form of government, but it is the one where there exists a fail-safe, iff strong institutions are present which respect the will of the people.

Democracy’s biggest weaknesses are due to the people themselves, which is why its existence alone isn’t suited for many nations.
