The major psychographical features of India are

  • The Himalayan mountains
  • Northern plains
  • The peninsular plateaus
  • The Indian desert
  • The coastal plains
  • The islands

The himalayan mountains : These are the young fold mountains. These mountains ranges are stretched in a east-west direction. They form an arc which extend upto 2,400 km.

Northern plains : It has been formed by three major rivers systems the Indus the Brahmaputra and the Ganga along with their tributaries. It is made up of alluvial soil. it is spread over an area of 7 lakh sq. km

The peninsular plateau : It is tableland which is consist of the old crystalline, Metamorphic and igneous rock. it was formed due to the breaking and drifting of the gondwanaland

The Indian desert : this region is purely Sandy plane covered with sand dunes. This reason receives scanty rainfall below 150 mm per year. Luni is the main river of this region.

The coastal plains : the coastal Plains are divided into three region the northern part of the coast is known as konkan the central stretch is known as the Kannad plain and the southern stretch is called the Malabar Coast.
