Glycolysis occurs in cytoplasm.

One glucose molecule is broken down into two molecules of pyruvate in the cytoplasm. In the process of creating two pyruvates, two molecules of ATP are used but four are created. Therefore, our net chemical energy from glycolysis is two molecules of ATP.
