The mansabdari system was introduced by Akbar, the word means a place or position, it meant a rank in the mansab system under the Mughals.

  • The mansabdari system thus was the basis of civil as well as military administration across the country.
  • The manasab determined the status of its holder in the official hierarchy.
  • The lowest mansabdars had to maintain ten horsemen. The highest mansab was reserved for the members of the royal household. They had to maintain 7000 horsemen.
  • The system fixed the pay of a mansabdar. During Akbar's reign, all mansabdars were paid in cash or in the form of a jagir.
