The first method used was the Castner-Kellner (or mercury) process. Sodium hydroxide is produced using a salt water brine. The sodium and chloride are separated. Electrons from chloride are collected at the anode where it combines into chlorine gas.

Solid sodium hydroxide is obtained from this solution by the evaporation of water. Principle — In castner-kellner method NaOH is prepared by the electrolysis of aqueous solution of NaCl (Brine). ... The sodium deposited at mercury forms Sodium Amalgam. Chlorine produced at the anode is removed from the top of the cell.
