Communalism usually refers to a system that integrates communal ownership and federations of highly localized independent communities.
 Communalism means that people of the same religion have common cultural, economic, political and social interests. Thus religion-based communities form the as the primary unit of a society.

The word Communalism comes from Community and is used to describe the fostering of cohesiveness within the community and adhesiveness from other communities. Thus, it can be simply understood as discrimination on the basis of one's community (religious, locality, etc.)

For example, a father taking his child to a mosque and teaching him the prayers isn't communalism but a father asking his child to interact with Muslims and restricting his social circles is Communalism.
