The factors for which variety improvement is done are:
1 Wider adaptability :Developing variety for wider adaptability helps in stabilising the crop production under different environmental conditions.
2 Higher yields - increases the produce obtained from crop.
3 Improved qualities - quality always depends on the type of crop
Example quality of protein present in pulses, quality such as colour, and taste of oil from oil seeds.
4 Biotic and abiotic resistance: The resistance of the crops to biotic factors such as insects and abiotic factors like water logging, Salt concentration, temperatures such as hot, cold have a negative impact on crop production. If the crop is resistant to these factors then it will give better produce.
5 Change in maturity duration: If the crops produce in short duration then the cost of production will be reduced. If the entire crop mature at the same time then harvesting becomes easy.
