Two major measure of variation are 1. Standard deviation:- it is the square root of the mean of squared deviation.
2.Variance:- it is the mean squared deviation.
For understanding it with ease:-
Let us suppose 4 students got 3,4,4 and 5 marks, respectively in a subject, then
Standard deviation will be:-
First compute simple mean i.e
3+4+4+5/4=16/4=4
Now compute
Sum of squared deviation
(-1+0+0+1).(-1+0+0+1)=2
Now as Mean of squared deviation
is variance= 2/4=0.5
Standard deviation is its square root
=√0.5
