Mechanism of absorption of elements in plants have revealed two main phase is a passive process, and the second phase is an active phase. The first phase involves a rapid uptake of ions from the soil or atmosphere to the outer or free space of cells, called the apoplast

The process of mineral absorption can be demarcated into 2 main phase .
1. Initial phase (passive phase )
2.Metabolic phase( active phase)
--------------------------------------------------------
--->Passive phase
* Rapid uptake of ions into the outer or free space of the cells (i.e.,the area of Apoplast)
*outer free surface comprises intercellular spaces and cell wall.
*In this phase , the ions are absorbed passively
i.e.,no energy expenditure occurs .
*The passive movement of ion into the Apoplast usually occurs through ion channels.
whereas
--->Active phase
*In this phase , the ions pass into inner space (i.e., the symplast area of the cells).
*The inner surface comprises cytoplasm and vacuoles .
*The movement of ion is an active process, i.e., the entry or exit of ion to and from the inner surface requires. the expenditure of metabolism energy.
Note : The movement of ions is usually called flux. The inward movement into the cells is influx and the outward movement is called efflux.
