Breathing occurs when the contraction or relaxation of muscles around the lungs changes the total volume of air within the air passages (bronchi, bronchioles) inside the lungs. ... Inspiration occurs when the inspiratory muscles—that is, the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles—contract.

Mechanism of breathing are as following :-

1. BREATHING is defined as the physical process in which oxygen is taken into the body and carbondioxide is forced out from the body.

2. Breathing have 2 sets of muscles :-

1. INTERNAL INTERCOASTAL MUSCLES

2. EXTERNAL INTERCOASTAL MUSCLES

3. Breathing involves 2 phases -

a). INSPIRATION OR INHALATION - it is the process of inhalation of air into lung and is brought about by chest expanding.

When the volume of theoraic cavity increase and the air pressure decreases.

b). EXPIRATION - It is the process by which the forcing of air out from lungs and is brought about by chest contracting.

When the size of theroacic cavity is reduced and the air pressure is increased it takes place.
