✍ In the diagram , C Represents a compression, R represents a refraction.

✍ consider a long pipe fitted with Piston and filled with air.

✍ Assume that the air is divided into layers.

✍ When the piston is pulled and pushed continuously series of compressions and rarefactions are formed in year and travels along the pipe as shown in the diagram.

✍ The air particles in the pipe do not move along the pipe but they simply vibrate along the direction of propagation of wave.

✍ Hence the waves propagating along the Pipe are longitudinal waves.
