Inhalation of air, as part of the cycle of breathing, is a vital process for all human life. As such, it happens automatically and does not need conscious control or effort. However, breathing can be consciously controlled or interrupted
Breathing allows oxygen to enter the lungs, from where it can be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Inhalation is the process of breathing in by which air (o2) is brought into lungs.
Process of inhalation/inspiration
- during inhalation the muscles attach to the ribs on their outer side contracts which causes the ribs to be pulled out expanding the chest cavity.
- the muscle wall between the chest cavity and abdominal cavity (diaphragm) contracts and moves downward expanding the chest cavity.
- the abdominal muscles contract.
- the expansion of the chest cavity creates a partial vacuum in the chest cavity as a result air is sucked into the lungs.
