Answer: In humans there are are 23 chromosomes in each cell. Of these , 22 pairs are of the same types in males and females . The 23rd pair is different n males and females . They are called the sex chromosomes X and Y . In females cells these are two  X and in males one X and one Y chromosome in the cells .

During the gamete formation , only half of the chromosomes are passed that is 23 chromosomes in female gamete , there is only one X chromosomes and in males there is either X or Y chromosomes . when an ovum and sperm fuses , the zygote gets 23 pairs of chromosomes .
