Northern plains of india originated by the deposition of alluvium brought by the river from himalayas.when eurasian plate collided with indian plate himalayas formed and the river from himalayas started flowing and where ever these rivers had flowed they deposited huge quantity of alluvium. This plain is mainly developed by rivers Ganga, Indus and Bramaputra.

BASED ON RELIEF FEATURES IT CAN BE DIVIDED INTO 4 BELTS

1.BHABHAR

-it is a pebble covered belt

- it is 8 to 16km in width

-lies parallel to shiwalik slopes

-all streams disapper into this belt

2.TERAI

-south of bhabhar belt lies terai

-originally covered with thick forest and later cut down for cultivation

-it is composed of new alluvial

3.BHANGAR

-largest part of the plain

-covered with rich alluvial

-terrace like features

-composed of old alluvial

4.KHADAR BELT

-new deposition

-ideal for cultivation

ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF NORTHERN PLAINS

it is one of the most fertile land becoz of depositions by river ganga,indus ,brahmaputra and fertile alluvial soil together with better climate and large amt. of water make agriculture a fruitful occupation in the northern plains.As we all know that agriculture is the backbone of the country and the northern plains contribute a major portion of yields, they are very important for the growth of the Indian economy.Apart from agriculture,other occupation like PISCIULTURE are also done that boost our economy.The availability of large amt. of water also helps us in providing irrigation and in generation of power.

This region is also important from the point of view of tourism and pilgrimage. It is the abode of many ancient holy places, temples and monuments such as the golden temple, ayodhya, patliputra.....

(i) The northern plains have been formed from the alluvium deposited by the mountain rivers.

(ii) They are located between the Himalayan rivers in the north and the Peninsular Plateau in the south.

(iii) They turned the soil on the surfaced land fertile for growing a rich harvest of variety of crops. This led to the development of the Indus Valley Civilization.

(iv) They are made up of deposits of alluvium and cover an area of 7 lakh sq. km.

(v) They are densely populated physiographic division of India and are believed to be highly productive in terms of agriculture.

(vi) The North Indian plains have the Indus river system in the west and the Ganga Brahmaputra river system in the East.
