The two main systems of indigo cultivation in India were - nij and ryoti. In the former, the planter cultivated indigo in the lands that he himself owned or rented. Labourers had to be especially hired for this kind of cultivation. On the other hand, in the ryoti system, the cultivators or 'ryots' were pressurised into signing a contract (satta). Under the contract, the cultivator received a cash advances, but in return had to commit at least 25% of his land to indigo cultivation. The planter supplied the seeds and the drill. The cultivator had to till the land, sow the seeds and maintain the crop.
