Answer:

To convert ethanol (aka ethyl alcohol) to ethanoic/acetic acid, you need to use a suitable oxidising agent - an acidic solution of potassium permanganate would be one such way to do this. The alcohol is first converted into ethanal (acetaldehyde) and then to the corresponding carboxylic acid

The method of converting ethanol into ethanoic acid with the help of chemical equation is given below :

Explanation:

Ethanol

It is a member of alcohol .

Its molecular formula is C₂H₅OH

Ethanoic acid

It is a member of carboxylic acid .

Its molecular formula is CH₃COOH

Ethanol can be converted into ethanoic acid by carrying out complete oxidation of ethanol .

Oxidation

It is the controlled reaction with oxygen .

In case of alcohols it is of two types :

  • Partial oxidation
  • Complete oxidation

Complete oxidation

A reaction of ethanol with oxygen in presence of strong oxidising agent alakaline potassium permagnate or potassium dichromate to form ethanoic acid .

C₂H₅OH +O₂------------> CH₃COOH

                (alkaline KMnO₄)
