Dietrich Brandis was a German expert who was appointed as the first inspector general of forests in India because British government was worried about Indian forests.
Dietrich Brandis introduced to scientific forestry to save the Indian forests. in scientific forestry, all different types of trees were cut down and in their place, only one type of tree was planted in a row.
they basically planted teak and sal for their profit. oak trees were disappearing in England and now they have to supply wood for royal navy and for transportation.
now they started cutting trees in India recklessly.
then they realised that a proper system had to be followed to save and manage the forests.. then Dietrich Brandis suggested government to formulate some rules. set up Indian forest service in 1864 and helped in the forming of Indian forest act 1865.
in 1906, imperial forest research institute was set up at dehradun.
