Answer: Magnetic fields can be mapped out using small plotting compasses : place the plotting compass near the magnet on a piece of paper. mark the direction the compass needle points. move the plotting compass to many different positions in the magnetic field, marking the needle direction each time.

Magnetic Field Line Plotting:
I will try to explain in the easiest way possible.
- First of all, you need a bar-magnet, a white paper, a compass and sharp pencils.
- Place the bar magnet firmly over the piece of paper.
- Now place the compass near the North pole of the magnet.
- Mark a point on the the paper where the north pole of the compass points.
- Now place the south pole of the pointer of compass on this point and again mark the new north pole position of the pointer.
- Go on till you reach the South pole of bar-magnet.
- Now join all the points with a sharp pencil.
- You will get a magnetic field line.
Hope It Helps.
