a.  Heterolytic fission (heterolysis)

b. Homolytic fission (homolysis)

a.  Heterolytic - If the bond breaks in such a way that each atom is given one of the shared pair's electrons, it is called homolytic fission. Half-headed arrows show the single electron movement.

b. Homolytic - The cleavage is called heterolytic fission when a covalent bond breaks in such a manner that both the shared pair electrons stay with one portion.
