- Proclamation of Emergencies - While the Indian President is the only person who has the power to declare an Emergency, the proclamation of Emergencies can only be approved by the Parliament. The proclamation needs the approval of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
- Creation of Legislative Councils - The Parliament can create and abolish Legislative councils for the states. However, this can only be done at the request of state asssemblies.
- Formation of new States - Only the Parliament has the power of forming new states. It can either join two states or separate a state from its previous territory. For example, the formation of Telangana in 2014.
- Admission of new States - The Parliament can admit new states in the Indian Union. For example; the admission of Sikkim in the year 1975.
