Mode of transmission of Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is usually a symptom of an infection in the intestinal tract, which can be caused by a variety of bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms. Infection is spread through contaminated food or drinking-water, or from person-to-person as a result of poor hygiene.
while the common cold virus is typically transmitted via airborne droplets (aerosols), direct contact with infected nasal secretions, or fomites (contaminated objects).
Diarrhoea can be transmitted via touch/surface transfer. If a person has diarrhoea and they don’t practice good hygiene such as thoroughly washing their hands after using the toilet then touch an object for example, a door handle some of the bacteria/germs responsible for causing diarrhoea can be left behind and can survive outside of the body for a while, if another person touches the same object the germs will transfer to their hand and may then find it’s way into their body through their mouth, should they eat or touch it or via mucus membranes such as the eyes and nose. If a toilet lid is left up when the toilet is flushed this can cause a fine particle spray which can also deposit germs far and wide, these can then be picked up via touch.
The common cold is transmitted via airborne transmission. If a person with a cold sneezes particles containing the cold germ is released from the nose and mouth, these land in surfaces and are touched or are breathed in by others thus infecting them with the germs. It is important to sneeze into a tissue, throw it away and wash your hands to control the spread of infection.
