In green plants, light energy is absorbed from sun during the process of photosynthesis. The excess energy absorbed during this phenomenon has to be disposed, else it might damage the plant. Carotenoid, the photosynthetic pigment helps to dispose the excess energy.
Below are few modes of disposal of excess energy:
Resonance energy transfer from excited molecule to another molecule via nonradioactive collision.
Transfer of electron between molecules.
Dissipation of heat energy.
Emission of light energy via fluorescence.
