The matter exists in one of the three states i.e. solid , liquid , gaseous, are classified in the basis of difference in physical properties.

In case of solids molecules are very close to each other and the inter molecular spaces between them are almost negligible as the force of attraction between the particles is very strong and so, can only vibrate about their mean positions.

In case of liquids inter-molecular spaces are quite larger than the solids but the molecules of liquids do not leave the liquid they remain in contact with each other and has force of attraction quite less than solids.

They can flow and can take up the shape of the container in

which they are stored .

In case of gases ,the inter-particle spaces are very large as inter-molecular force of attraction between the particles is negligible .So, they are free to move in any direction and can take up the shape and volume of the container in which they are stored.

Thank you!
