The morphological features of earthworm include -
- The earthworms have long cylindrical body.
- They are divided into more than hundred short segments called metameres.
- The dorsal surface of its body is marked by dark median mid dorsal line.
- The ventral surface is distinguished by the presence of genital openings.
- The anterior end consist of mouth and the prostomium, a line which serves as a covering for mouth.
- It also acts as a wedge to force open cracks in soil.
- It is also sensory in function.
- The first body segment is called prostomium.
- The segment 14-16 is covered by dark band in a mature earthworm.
- It is basically a glandular tissue called clitellum.
- The body is divisible in three prominent regions called preclitellar, citellar and postcitellar.
- Four pairs of spermathecal apertures are located at 5th - 9th segments.
- The female has a genital pore in the mid ventral region that is 14th segment.
- A pair of male genital pore are present in the ventro-lateral side of 18th segment.
- There are numerous minute pores called nephridiopores on earthworm's body.
- In each segment of body, there are rows of S shaped setae.
- These setae are embedded in the epidermal pits.
- They help in locomotion.
