After establishing himself in northern India, Akbar planned to extend his empire in the Deccan. In 1591 he sent emissaries to Khandesh, Ahmadnagar, Bijapur and Golkunda, the states of the Deccan asking them to accept Mughal supremacy. Of these only Sultan Raja Ali Khan of Khandesh agreed to submit to the Mughals.
