The NRCP stands for National River Conservation Plan. It is a centrally sponsored scheme launched in 1995 and is being implemented by the Central Government jointly on a cost sharing basis (50:50 since April 2015). It aims at preventing pollution of rivers across different states of India. It commenced with the Ganga Action Plan (GAP) in 1985, extended as GAP-II in 1993 to cover the tributaries Gomti, Yamuna, Mahananda and Damodar and finally enlarged in 1995 as National River Conservation Plan  (NRCP) to include other major rivers of the country.
