National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) 2005 was passed in September 2005.

☆ The Act provides 100 days assured employment every year to every rural household.

☆ The act aims to ensure right to work and livelihood in rural areas.

☆ The act provides for minimum wage and focuses on labor intensive techniques including making roads, provision for water harvesting.

☆ Its provisions have been extended to all the villages.

☆ It provides for 1/3rd reservation of jobs for women.

☆ The NREGA act puts the onus on the government to provide employment..Under this scheme, the gram panchayat  at the village level, after proper verification of those unemployed and can work,  registers households, and issue job cards. In case of failure unemployment allowance is given.

☆ For example  in Mahrashtra ,  for the year 2015-16, the scheme benefited 11.94 lakhs household , with 44% participation of women , person days generated as per the scheme was 695.00 ( in lakhs)

☆ Likewise in  Assam , NREGA generated employment to 14.15 lakh households, with 34% of women's participation and generating 441.68 ( in lakhs) person days .

☆ Example of state like Uttar Pradesh, with generating employment for 50.95 lakhs households and with 29% of women's participation, further it provided for 1656.04( in lakhs) of person days.
