1] In the 18th century, the French society was divided into two -

The clergy - This group consisted of people who worked at the churches.Nobility - This group consisted of those people who were born in noble families, like kings.Commoners - This group was generally referred to as the third estate. This group consisted of merchants, artisans, lawyers, sevants and even landless labourers.

2] Louis XVI belonged to the Bourbon family of kings. The two major problems that he faced soon after he ascended the throne were -

The French treasury was empty because of the overuse of money for luxurious purposes by his predecessors. The long years of wars between France and Britain had drained the financial resources of France.

3] The term Old Regime is usually used to describe the society and institutions of France before 1789.

4] Peasants came under the third estate. They were very uncomfortable as only they, that is, the third estate was told to pay taxes. Both the other estates [ Clergy and nobility ] were given special privileges. This depicts that the peasants of France under the old regime was facing a lot on unfavourable and miserable conditions.
