1) The French society, in the Old regime, was divided into three estates:
(a) First estate (Clergy) : These included the people who were indulged in the activities of the church. They didn't have to pay taxes and had a lot of land.
(b) Second estate (Nobility) : These include the officials of the kings and the nobles of the country. They also didn't pay taxes.
(c) Third estate : These were the common people of the country. They pay both direct and indirect taxes. Full burden of paying taxes was put on the third estate.
