Oxidation of ethanol. Ethanol is oxidised by acidified sodium dichromate in a test-tube reaction, firstly to form ethanal(acetaldehyde), and with further oxidation, ethanoic acid (acetic acid). The experiment is most appropriate for post-16 students.
