The rebellion of Bastar (now in the state of Chhattisgarh )  in 1910 was caused by a combination of various factors.

In 1905, the colonial government proposed the reservation of 2/3rd of the forest area and stop shifting cultivation, hunting and collection of forest produce and exploit the natural resources for their own benefits

A number of different communities live in Bastar and speak different languages. The people of Bastar believe that land is a gift from Mother Earth to humans, and that humans should respect this gift. They look after their forests with great affection and care.

Gunda Dhur Tribal leader played a major role on the rebellion. The rebels led by Gunda Dhur robbed, looted and burnt British granaries and redistributed grains to the poor.

Even though the British were able to suppress rebellion movement, it took three months to bring the situation under their control by using heavy arms and ammunition. Later the Area to be reserved was reduced to half

The tribal people living across the Kanger Forest region praise the heroic acts of Gunda Dhur in various folk songs, stories etc.
