A communication perspective focuses on the way in which our shared meanings and practices are constituted through language and symbol, the construction of messages, and their dissemination through media, organizations, and society.

A communication perspective not only examines the way that messages transmit information and influence individual and collective behavior; it also examines the way that messages create, sustain, and change cultures and communities.  Communication scholars explore the form, content, medium and patterns of messages and how they influence the way that people make meaning and take action.  We examine how messages are produced, how they are circulated among a group of people, and how they are interpreted with an eye on the important consequences of messages.

A communication perspective helps us engage some of the most pressing social, political, and cultural issues facing our nation and our world.  Our award winning faculty are actively engaged in research and teaching that addresses important questions such as:

• How does communication facilitate high-quality doctor-patient relationships and contribute to improved health outcomes?

• What features of public discourse enable and facilitate democracy and active citizenship?

• How can communication promote healthy organizational workplaces that are safe, humane, and innovative?

• How do media technologies transform cultures, nations, and geopolitical relationships?  How does public policy and the legal environment shape the use and development of media technology?

Despite the old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me,” in actual fact any message potentially has significant consequences for the way we understand ourselves and our place in the world around us. Communication always makes a difference. To acquire a communication perspective is thus to learn how to make a positive difference in the world using language, symbols, and messages.
