There are two stages viz. karyokinesis or nuclear division and cytokinesis or cytoplasmic division.
Karyokinesis consists of four stages - prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase.
1. Prophase : During prophase, condensation of chromosomes start. The thin and thread like chromosomes start thickening. They are seen with their pair of sister chromatids. In animals the centrioles are seen to duplicate and move to duplicate opposite poles of the cells. Nuclear membrane and nucleolus start disappearing.
