In simple terms, defraction of light is the spreading out of light rays due to an obstacle.
Other than light, defraction can happen with many other rays including:
- Sound waves
- Electromagnetic waves
- Water waves
There are two types of defraction. This are:
- Fresnel diffraction which occurs when light from a source meets with an obstacle
- Fraunhofer diffraction which happens when plane wave-fronts with the object effectively at infinity
